What is Buddhism?
Buddhism started in northeastern India and is based on the teachings of a man called Siddhartha Gautama. The religion is 2,500 years old and is followed by 350 million Buddhists worldwide.
Buddhists want to stop suffering. Buddhists believe in Nirvana. Nirvana is the most enlightened, and happy state that one can achieve. A state without suffering.
Buddhism is different from many other faiths because it does not think about a relationship between people and God. Buddhists do not believe in a God who created the world.
Buddhists do sometimes pay respect to the images of Buddha (known as Buddha after Siddhartha Gautama), as an expression of gratitude for his teaching, not to worship him or ask favours.
There are different types of Buddhism, such as Mahayana.
