It was Guru Amar Das who made this one of the special days when all Sikhs would gather to receive the Gurus blessings at Goindwal. Events in the past have made this day special for Sikhs.
In 1577 the foundation stone of The Golden Temple was laid on Diwali.
In 1619 on Diwali the Golden Temple was illuminated with many lights to welcome home and celebrate the release of Guru Hargobind from imprisonment in Gwalior fort.
Every year Sikhs remember these events by putting lamps outside gurdwaras and sweets are shared around. The largest gathering happens at The Golden Temple which is lit up with thousands of lights.
