Having friends is brilliant!

Friends are important people in our lives – just like our family. We care about them. We want to spend time with them. Friends listen to the good and bad things that happen. They are fun to be with. They make us feel good about ourselves.

Some tips on starting a conversation with a new person…

Sometimes people feel shy or just a bit stuck for words after saying “hello”. Here are a few tips for going on with a conversation.

  • Be yourself

  • Be respectful

  • Try to remember a good joke or two

  • A favourite movie, book, recent magazine article or a television program can all be topics of conversation

  • Try to remember the person's name and use it

  • Try and find out the other person's interests and discuss what you have in common

  • Look for good things in the other person

  • If you like the other person, you could ask and arrange to meet again

  • It's OK to excuse yourself if you don't feel you're getting along well
